Clinton fights for New Hampshire votes
At the McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club dinner Friday night in the Manchester, N.H., Verizon Wireless Center, Hillary Clinton addressed a divided crowd of Democrats. The CNN/WMUR tracking poll released just that morning had put Bernie Sanders 30 points above Clinton and she didn’t shy away from talking about her deficit.
“I’m going to fight for every vote,” Clinton said.
Saturday morning, she strolled into a Belmont Hall & Restaurant unannounced to keep that promise.
Clinton walked between tables, taking time with everyone as they finished their breakfasts. A woman stood up immediately as Clinton entered the diner.
“You have my vote,” the woman said.
But not everyone was so sure.
Clinton approached a father and daughter, and when they told her they weren’t supporters, Clinton smiled.
“I hope I can change your mind by Tuesday,” Clinton told them.
And others seemed completely unperturbed by their brush with the candidate, eating their food and talking as if the small diner had not suddenly filled with a Democratic presidential contender and a swarm of staff and press.
Clinton didn’t seem to mind either way. She made her way slowly around the diner, spending five minutes talking to and laughing with diners who invited her to sit down in their booth.
New Hampshire State Sen. Donna Soucy, who accompanied Clinton, said this kind of campaigning is what drives her own support for the former Secretary of State.
“She has a willingness to have ordinary conversations,” Soucy said. “She’s listening.”
